This powerful, joyous book moved me to tears. For all who remember the story of little Alana Dung and her battle with leukemia, this parallel tale of her life will steal your heart.
Written in playful rhyme, exuberant Wailana the Waterbug spends her days frolicking through reeds and rocks, leading parades of tadpoles and frogs. “Along with her friends she would practice each day/ Perfecting her dance for the water ballet. With a leap and a spin, she heard cheers from the crowd/Her parents just gleamed and they felt very proud.”
After the little bug falls ill, she grows a pair of wings and takes to the sky, transformed into a dragonfly. Furuya’s warm, effervescent paintings are exceptional.
The book’s proceeds go to the Alana Dung Research Foundation for clinical studies and research to improve the quality of life for sick children.
